For a while, I was taking quantities of antacids far past the recommended dose, so much so that I began to worry about the potential for how it might affect my long-term health. After meeting with several Gastroenterologists and receiving two upper-endoscopies, with a pH tracker pinned to my esophagus the second time, they determined that the acid levels in my stomach were average. I stopped using Gaviscon and all other antacids effective immediately, with no negative effect on my heartburn, and was prescribed an additional medication which I believe is meant to help me with my heartburn through the management of anxiety.
